  1. Provided me years of great service. Reliable, capable, and still extremely great even in 2014. There’s a reason this camera is still being used widely, even though newer models are out (pmw-200)i got an ex1 right when it first came out and shot a feature on it, we were all amazed at the quality. Coming from a z1u, this was a whole new ballgame. Even though i now use a c100, i miss the ex1 in many ways. The goods-14x zoom with constant f1. 9 aperture-1/2″ sensor is a big boost from typical 1/3″-hi-res lcd looks great in even direct sun-battery lasts a good long time-good low light ability, even high gain looks more like grain than noise-sharp, true 1080 resolution(beats the pants off most dslr video)-speaking of dslrs, the ex1 can do some very nice ‘shallow’ dof-built in lens cap-best focus peaking i’ve ever used-robust codec despite being only 35mb-great ‘sony’ color/image-rotating hand grip-sdi outwhats not to like?-no hdmi-a bit heavy-rotating hand grip sticks out, making for awkward handling-sxs is expensive, but sd cards adapters fix this beautifully-no cheap battery alternatives(just suck it up and buy the real thing)did i mention it’s reliable as a tank?. I’ve held my fair share of cameras, and even well made ones sometimes feel plasticity. The ex1 feels great all around, and it just works.
    1. This camera is a game changer for it’s niche. Superb camera for it’s price point (under 10k). Nothing in it’s comparable market comes close to this camera. Great build quality, 3x half-inch sensors, superb image – handles blacks really well, and very well designed. Perfect 2nd camera for larger productions or 1st camera for lower budget docs. Only issue i’ve found is a sticky slow zoom, which i have tolerated due to how great it performs otherwise. Sony will have to go a long way to better this baby.
  2. Solid performer, with a few quirks. The ex1 model is sony’s first xdcam model specifically targeted at the higher end of the prosumer segment. It offers the best image quality in its class, bar none. . If the operator is aware of the cmos vs. The most important item, if one has only shot ccd cameras, is to be aware of the rolling shutter situation on cmos cameras. This is not a problem by any means, just someting that one needs to compensate for when planning the shot. Frame rate and shutter angle are ever so important when determining panning speed or tracking a moving subject, and when shooting any scene containing strobes (such as live shows, emergency vehicles, etc). This is not an issue specific to this camera, but rather to any camera employing cmos sensors. Focus is dead-on accurate, image quality is superb, battery life on the standard battery could be better, and plan for plenty of storage for offloading recorded media.
    1. Best thing since super 16mm. This is not a technical review. I’m a screenwriter and film director and formerly exclusively worked on 35mm and 16mm. I bought the pmw-ex1 in january 2008, shortly after its release and have just shot an arthouse feature film on it. This is undoubtedly the best thing since super 16mm for filmmaking. In fact i prefer it to 35mm: if you set your scene up smartly, you need almost no lighting. It is light and manageable, so you do not need a huge camera crew. We shot ‘documentary style’ and our crew consisted of myself, as director, a cameraman, a sound recordist, a continuity/logger, a production manager, and two general assistants. It was a pleasure filming and it was only possible to make a professional film this way because of the ex1. The images are crystal clear, the latitude is amazing.
      1. Greatest new hd camcorder in the under $10k range. This camera is an absolute winner for sony. Incredible full-blown 1080p hd. This is the panasonic hvx-200 killer. But then, it surpasses the hvx in almost every catagory. From chip size, pixel size & number, fujinon lens, to the much better sxs flash express recording medium. Oh, and did i mention the fantastic, in-camera, slow motion (and fast motion) which is silky smooth.
